August 19, 2016 Paramount Pictures will release the new version of the 1959 epic movie Ben Hur. The question in my mind is how this new version will compare to the original classic?
The original movie from 1959 starring Charlton Heston and directed by William Wyler tells the story of a Jewish prince who is betrayed by a friend, sent into slavery, regains his freedom through circumstances even his doubtful heart sees as Divine direction and returns to seek revenge. The whole movie takes place at the time of Jesus birth, teaching and death weaving a story of hope and redemption throughout. The 1959 version won 11 Oscars plus 16 other awards. Think of your favorite movie scenes and you, like me might recall the famous chariot race from this blockbuster movie. A few years ago I walked an ancient racetrack in Israel that would have been a contemporary to the one featured in the movie and could envision this scene almost hearing the chariot wheels, horse’s hooves and cheering crowd.
This new movie version will star Jack Huston and include Morgan Freeman. The new movie is rated PG-13 and opens in theaters this Friday. I hope this new version will retain the clear message of the original in a way that a family can view together. It won’t be long now to see if this can be accomplished. They will have big sandals to fill.
